recovering money

In trying to get my credit back to respectable, a friend did some settlements for me (with money that had been raised for me to get out of debt) with some of my credit card companies. On a Travelers Card issued by Citibank he accidently did a settlement with two different companies on the same day. One of the companies, DRS Bonded, I had been sending money to for two years and considered them the owner of the account. Northland Group had sent a letter that said they were offering a settlement on a Citibank Card and we mistook which card the settlement was for (I also had a Ford Citicard and thought this was the one being settled). Unfortunately it was also for the Travelers Card. When I contact Northland about the mix-up they said to send them my receipt from DRS; which I have faxed to them twice. I have not received a refund and lately when I call they don't answer. I didn't know a company could come along and offer a settlement on an account that I was already paying another company for. What can I do to recover this money? Thanks.
