um. i worked as a skiptracer for some of their competition for student loans. they're going to push you to pay as much as they think they can get out of you, they want you to feel guilty and pressured. the second you show a backbone they'll say they're recommending legal action, blah blah blah. if you just want to buy time until you can settle then lie to them. say you've relocated to china. they'll call back, then you say you've already told them he doesn't live here, never call this number again. if they do they can(but won't) be charged with harassment. if they receive a certain number of ministry compaints about their tactics it can hurt them, so threatening them with formal action might get them to back off a bit...but there are specifics about what would constitute a legit complaint, so unless you have something on them they'll only push harder. try to trap them into committing a faux pas. meanwhile raise or borrow the money you need. if you owe a lot and it's been a while they'll settle for like half of what you owe. but don't suggest this or they'll assume you're sitting on more money. tell them you've got a lot of bills to pay and only about half what you owe them, so you'd rather pay off your other debts in full first. remember that if you can fenegle your way into a favourable settlement deal you have to settle in full...they won't take payments for a low settlement. and for the love of god get a receipt that says settled IN FULL, don't stop bugging them until you have it in hand. otherwise they're liable to "accidentally" update your file incorrectly and sell the remainder of your debt to another agency...who in turn will tell you they have no record of your settlement being approved, hoping they can put enough pressure on you that you'll pay the rest sometime down the road just to shut them up. good luck.
