I have seen several letters similar to this. It seems that some agencies are switching tactics by pretending to be your "friend" and are only trying to "help" you.

While not strictly illegal most of these letters are full of misrepresentations and lies. What they won't tell you in the "friendly" conversation is that the SOL is past and they can't sue you or collect unless you acknowledge the debt and start the SOL over again.

All of these letters I know of to date have been to creditors with expired SOL's. No wonder they are trying to pretend to "help" when all they are really doing is trying to trick you into starting a new SOL.

The term "wolf in sheep's clothing" comes to mind.
