I have caller id and had a similar problem. Verizon now has anonomous call rejector which means that if an out of number call comes up on my caller id my phone will not ring direct. It will ask whoever is calling to state their name and then my phone rings and tells me who is on the line. if it is a telemarker they aren't likely to go through the hassle of waiting to see if I will accept the call. If I don't want to accept the call it will ring to voice mail or leave a couple different options.

sorry, horrible explanation for a great service. But you may want to check with your phone provider and see if they have it. It stops all out of area calls flat.
