A Credit card was taken out in my name four years ago. The collection agency finally caught up with me and I am trying to dispute the charges. I sent them a debt validation letter 52 days ago return receipt requested. Today when I called Sherman/Northland to find out why the account was still showing up on my credit report as of today. Northland told me that they had sent the paper work to Sherman, but that they had no proof it was not me, so it could take years for it to come off my credit report. I told them that I had done research and that federal law requires you to respond within thirty days. The guy told me that actually the law states that I had thirty days from the time of the letter to respond to them and that since I had not ( I received the first letter seven months ago) that IF they could resolve this issue then it would take much longer. He said that Sherman would not be able to do anything until I sent a name affidavit a copy of DL and SS card and a police report. I do not know what to do. I have already filed a complaint with the FTC and sent them a debt validation letter, but the man I talked to (after trying to call for four hours) made it sound like a lost cause. What should I do?
