I guess I'll give you the bad news first: If the collections and repossession are indeed legitimate (i.e. no identity fraud or statement vs bank account discrepancies), negative items stay on the credit bureau reports for 7 years. There is no way to remove legitimate negative items other than time. If there are mistakes, you can dispute them, but you'll need to do it with the companies directly - the bureaus don't do much in that respect (I learned this the hard way). The good news is, the collections are from 1999 - almost more than four years ago already. That means you only have 3 years until they come off. If you can show that you've had no late payments since then, you might be able to convince a potential landlord that you won't have a problem. In addition, you can also include a general statement on each of your credit reports explaining the situation - this is free. The bureaus can help you write one or you can write one yourself. Good luck! www.equifax.com www.experian.com www.transunion.com
