Help! How do I take clear something that has reached the SOL?

I have read through this site and have found some very useful information. I have 2 debts (both under $500) that are more than 7 years old (from the original debtor, but more recently under a CA). They both show up on a credit report that I ran last week. One of them disappeared for ahwile - it didn't show up on a report I ran over a year ago. If I understand what I read on this site correctly, these companies can continue to attempt to collect the debt, but can't continue to report it. Is my interpretation correct? If so, how do I go about getting these desbts removed from the Big-3??? Thank you for any help you can provide.
