it is probably important to stress that NOT all bill collectors get paid on a commission basis. i have been a debt collection for upwards of 6 years. it is a highly stressful job, depending on where you work. ive done pre and post charge offs working for 3rd party agencies to 1st party credit grantors. debt collection is a spectacular job to have, IF you are good at it. i must admit that i will be the "mean" bill collector, but only if i have to. i always allow ample time before i actually have someone sued. if after 6 months or so of delinquency if someone is making no attempts at voluntarily repaying their debt, they may just need more motivation. if the attorney cant set up a voluntary arrangement with the debtor, OF COURSE THERE IS THE CHANCE THAT YOU WILL GET SUED, if that is what is written in your contract with the grantor. there is no reason why every debt collector be dubbed an asshole.....as, we do not refer to every debtor as a deadbeat. that would just be silly.
