Validation Letter?????????

I recently discovered something on my credit report and was told to write the company a validation letter. I am not sure what exactly a validation letter is? Can anyone help me? I am not sure what to include in the letter. Also the same account appeared on my credit report 3 different times by 3 different companies. Should I write to all 3?? I would really appreciate any help.
