credit report clarification... PLEASE!!!

If anyone can help? I have a debt listed on my credit report as being closed and charged-off on 10/1997, yet says it was updated as of 05/1999. This debt was overtaken by a collection agency as of 02/1999 and says it was updated on 12/2002. I did speak to someone but never agreed to pay the debt and now it seems another collection agency has taken over the debt. 1. In Illinois, what is the SOL for credit card debt?
2. Is the SOL beginning with the original charge-off of 10/1997 from the original credit card provider? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!
