3 bureau CR and dispute????????

I have had credit problems, want 2 get a house so I pulled my credit record on-line w/ the 3 bureau instant report. There is some debt still listed past the 7 yrs + 180 days that I need to get rid of. So I tried to contact Experian online and by phone (2 get their mailing address) and came up with them saying I have to order a credit report directly from them if i want to dispute an item! Is this correct? Is it legal? I already paid for these reports and they (the CRA's) were paid by the company that I paid!!! Should I just make copies of the reports I have and circle the disputed item(s) or do I really have to order 1 from them to make it work? Any advice and/or input on what I am supposed 2 do would be appreciated.
