Collection Agency is suing my mother...please read

Hello. I thank you in advance for taking the time to read this. My mother received a summons to appear in court from a Collection agency. They are suing her for 1273.00 when her original debt was just 500.00 to providian a few years ago. I am not sure if the SOL has run out but I will try to find out.
My question is this; my mother is very nervous and does not want to go to court. she makes very little money and she basically lives paycheck to paycheck. What will happen if she goes to court? and what is the best thing that she could do at this time?? please any advice would be really appreciate it.
