First and foremost you and your husband are at a majon disadvantage since he missed his chance at his day in court. I would suggest that you dispute with the Credit Reporting Agency the Lien amount. The lawfirm/creditor will have 45 days from the date of notification to validate the debt or the reporting line will have to be removed. Once removed, it is no problem to dispute again. If this is unsuccessful, the best time to contact any bill collector is towards the end of the month when most are scrambling to get there End of the month numbers up, this is the time to negotiate. But be warned, Get all settlement offers in writing prior to paying. And always agree on the reporting status upon receipt of payment prior to remitting any monies.
