Problem with Amex

I posted a long message about this a while ago and value the responses I received.

Basically, I had an Amex card which began charging me an incorrect interest rate because they said I made a late payment. After many disputes with them about this I simply stopped paying. They recently lost a class action suit regarding a similar interest problem. Additionally, I was charged for merchandise I did not receive and did dispute.

The total owed is about $9000.

About 3 weeks ago, I got a call from some attorney (I could not understand his name and associates). I called him back and got a phone answered "Law Office" They wanted to settle and they kept threatening to sue me.

I have been considering my options, and am not totally sure what to do. To be honest I had kind of forgotten about it and was waiting to see what they would do.

I just moved to FL and am worried they could sue me in MA without my knowledge.

In a very bizarre move, the "law office" called me again Friday and left a message as if I had never spoken to them... "Give us a call we need to talk to you about a legal matter." I thought this was really bizarre for a "law office" that was getting the paperwork ready.

In any case, I assume they are a CA and not lawyers.

My top two priorities are to avoid a judgement and to repair my credit report.

I could pay this debt if I need to.

So what should I do?

Would it be reasonable to send them a letter asking them to verify the debt and inform them that all correspondence and all legal happenings shall occur in Florida (And provide them my new address) I do not want to miss mail in MA and get a default judgement against me. Would copy of this letter get a judgement in MA thrown out if they ignored it and sued me there with out notifying me?

Should I simply pay them the full amount provided they agree to fix my credit report?

Would it be ridiculous to pay them while still stating I do not agree with the debt and then once my report is fixed, sue Amex for $5K in small claims court? Would Amex show up? I think I have a pretty solid case about the interest. (Since they already lost one.)

Any advice what to do next?

Sean
