Evicted, now want unpaid rent for lease dates

I was evicted (for not paying rent) in December, so I quickly moved to another apartment. Now I have received a notice from an attorney representing the rental company that they want rent money for the period of Jan-May (the lease expired in August). The is written much like a collection letter with the 30 day notice, no threat of a lawsuit or anything. I'm just a poor college student.... Any ideas how I should go about this bill for $3024.24?!
