If you are challenging the accuracy of credit information, then it is perfectly correct for them to verify your identity.

Usually they request current utilit bills (originals, not copies).If you haven't supplied that, or other verifiable original data, then they are being reasonable in their request.

There is a LOT of id fraud around.
