A paid collection account has the same negative effect as an unpaid one. Further if you pay off old accounts they can be referenced on the credit report as having a date of last activity as to the time you pay them off. You should condition of any payment on removal from credit report. This can somtimes be effectuated by "buying" the debt form the creditor.
