If your employer doesn't provide health ins. its far too expensive for most people to afford it - the whole system sucks.

They're crap about 'going legal' is a standard threat. They can NOT just go get a judgment, its far from that simple. They would have to sue you FIRST. You'd get notice via a Summons, you'd file your Answer to it and go to court. You have EXEMPTIONS that prevent them from just taking anything and everything you have. In court, you would likely be given the chance to settle before seeing a judge, so you'd have some recourse. If you don't go to court, they win by default, you lose any settlement opportunities, and you end up paying on THEIR terms. If your financial situation is such that a garnishment would cause you undue hardship, a judge may not even let them HAVE a garnishment. In some states, you can petition to pay a judgment in payments in lieu of garnishment. Check your state laws on that.

The problem is, with them having direct access to your account, they'll start taking whatever THEY want as payments and really leave you stuck.

The problem with whatever you're paying is that a creditor is under no obligation to accept less than the full amount, so just because you're paying them some amount, it will NOT stop them from going after more or suing you.
