If you don't go to court, you will probably lose by default. They will get a judgement for the full amount of the lawsuit.

If you appear, then you have the opportunity to challenge the lawsuit, including the amount they say you owe. You also have the chance to negotiate a settlement and some kind of payment schedule if that is what you want.
