Somewhere around 99 or 2000 I started getting harassment calls and letters from a place called Gulfstate. I was having some serious medical problems and couldn't follow up on who they were. When I ask questions or the name of the person calling they refused to give me their name or to answer my questions. They were very threatening in their contact.
In Jan of 2001 after being turned down for an apartment I ordered my credit report. This was on the report. I wrote a validation letter by certified mail. It came back non diliverable. I called the CRA and was told there was nothing they could do and that was the only address they had for them.
I went on the computer and found a lot of imformation on them and that they had already been in court because of their conduct and had to pay. It seems they buy old debts for pennies and add on money then go after someone (doesn't matter if it is the right person or not). They have offices all over the US and when someone has something removed from the CRA report they just move it to another office of theirs with another name. I finally found a valid address and wrote them by certified mail. No response.
This was removed from my report in March of 2001 on Equifax (Experian refused to remove it even though it was never validated. They also have a listing on my report that the house I lived in forr five years is a business not a resident and they refused to change it saying a creditor put it on there and they couldn't change it). Last of May 2001 I applied for a house. This had been reentered under OSI Portfolio. I called the CRA and they removed it again.
In July of 2002 I moved to Ohio and within six months started getting mail from a Northland Group in Edina, Minn. on this. I received a copy of my credit report yesterday and there it is under Sherman Acquisition LP.
I am going to contact the attorneys listed in the above message and hope anyone that is dealing with these people do the same.
