NEED CREDIT HELP

I received a letter from JBC & Associates trying to collect on a check that was NSF in 1997. I don't remember that far back and I'm almost positive that I did not write that check. They sent me a letter a while back as well and I just decided to pay it. The thing is, on the letter it stated that I owed approx $40, but then when I called in to pay the amount almost tripled!!! First, I would like to know if they can collect on something that old and right now, I am disputing this new charge. If I dispute it, can they raise up the amount I owe even while it is in dispute? I haven't had any credit problems for about 5 years now, and I don't know why I've suddenly been contact for something that happened 6 years ago. Can anyone help me?
