Help....Please tell me I didn't screw up!

My husband and I had an American Express. To make the story short, our life circumstances have changed, and our income decreased. We have gone into "survival mode" and have been paying only the necessities. Credit cards have fallen by the wayside. None have been paid since March. American Express turned us over to a collection agency (Collectcorp). They started calling daily, leaving a message at home and then calling my husband at work. Anyhow, to make them leave us alone - we sent them a cease communication letter. We will pay this debt, but can't right now, and can't afford to get in trouble at work by the constant phone calls. OK - so did I screw up by sending the letter? Have I left them no choice but to sue us? What should I do? HELP!!!
