Statute of limitations period on credit card debt: when does it start?

Is the statute of limitations period on non-secured credit card debt defined by calculating it from the period beginning at the original time of DEFAULT and/or last payment on the debt, OR is it taken from the period beginning at the time of judgment? Since judgments often do not take place for some while after default, couldn't the total collection process extend well beyond the nominal statute period for a given state? I'm in California, for which the SOL on this debt is four years.
