You need to give them a valid telephone number to stop them from calling friends, relatives, and neighbors as they skip trace you. If you provide them with a valid phone number, they no longer have a permissable purpose to call third parties, since they already have a contact for you - the phone number you provide. If you cease and desist, you risk their filing a law suit in the blind. Actually, I have spoken to 3 collections firms which I called since they were harrassing my elderly parents claiming that they were giving them a false phone number. I called their 800 number so they could "capture" my caller id from the cell phone and told them that they had a valid phone number which I was calling from and that they were to no longer call anyone looking for me, since they already had my valid phone number! That stopped the third party calls. Re: the calls,, the phone goes to voice mail after 4 rings,, I never answer unknown, out of area, or unavailble phone numbers showing on the caller id. At the end of the day the phone shows 60 Missed Calls,, 30 new messages. I retrieve and delete the messages. For the first six months I was routinely receiving 60 missed calls 30 messages per day. 18 months later it averages 10 missed calls 5 new messages per day. You are under no legal obligation to take their calls nor return them, but if they don't have a number, they will haunt everyone you know or knew looking for you.
