hi, helpful ones. in 1998-999, i had three credit cards and no job, just finishing school and all. long story short: credit cards were sent to collection agencies, who hassled the heck out of me with phone calls. i moved. didn't give them my new address. and didn't hear from them again until maybe a month ago. i received a letter from allied interstate reading that i owed sherman acquisition $3k, and that i needed to pay asap. i sent them a letter in response, asking them to provide me with the name and address of the original creditor, as well as my ss number...just so that i could know where this debt was coming from, really. if i was going to pay it back, i wanted to know what it was for...since i have two other credit card-gone-to-collection accounts out there. anyway, they wrote back with a settlement offer: i'd have to pay either 50 cents to the dollar up front, or pay the full $3k in an acceptable payment plan. but they didn't say who the original creditor was. i phoned a non-prof for some guidance. they said they could help me, but that i would need to pay them 10% of total debt for their services. my question is this: do i pay the $3k in payments or go with the $1.5 k up front? or do i go with the non-prof place, pay them 10% of said debt and provide them with a monthly payment? or do i continue to ignore these debts and hope they forget about me?
