Fax vs. Certified Mail ???

Is faxing validation or sol as good as certified mail? This doesn't make sense to me.
With certified mail you have proof that they accepted it and on what date they accepted it. If I sent something via fax, can I resend it via certified or should I just be satisfied with the fax.. and why? Thanks for replying.
