OPENING A CLOSED ACCOUNT

I hope someone can give me some advice or HELP!!!! I have a charge account that has been inactive since 5/97 (last payment made). The account was charged off and marked closed. This is also noted in various credit reports received: 4/19/99, 11/15/02, and 2/19/03. In the first week in March I received a letter of garnishment. So I responded in the 10 day period to the court and the lawyer for the collection agency. I sent it return receipt. Only the court respond, telling me I needed to get copies and they will be $.75 a copy. The lawyer for the collection agency did not respond. I couldn't get any information from the credit card company nor the lawyer for the collection agency. The the first week in June my check was garnish. I got another copy of my credit report dated 6/03 and it stated that I've made payments to the account in 1998, 1999 up February of 2000. It also showed the account as being open. IS THIS LEGAL ????????? PLEASE ADVISE.
