sol-7 or 7 1/2 yrs ??

i read on one legal site that the satute for reporting is actually 7 1/2 yrs because it doesnt start until the oc's charge off date.
there was alot of confusion since the law reads last activity / or the date you miss the 1st payment/or charge off date, so it was clarified to be the oc's charge off date. is this correct? could make a big difference of 6 mo. if you are useing the sol to get it off the cr and they come back and say ,no its still running, perhaps it would open a new can of worms. please clear this up for me :)
