Since you have not made a payment on the obligation since November 2002, I think it is safe to assume that the debt has been charged off. Is this a credit card or personal loan? Most banks sell off credit card debt after a certain amount of time, others hold their debts and send those debts out to be serviced by various agencies. It is not unusual to find out that the debt is with the 3rd or 4th agency.

If your debt has been sold then the letter from the CA will usually list the current creditor (ie: Sherman Acquistions,LP) and the original creditor (ie: CitiBank, CitiFinancial). This information is usually found somewhere on the statement or dun notice. Some CA's use your original account number as their number while others use the last 10 digits or a number of their own design.

I would be more than happy to list a few of the backdoor numbers to the banks if a reply is received.
