First find out when it was actually "charged off" month and year. Then go back 6 months prior to that. That is usually the date they start the 7 years it can be reported/ stay on your report. If it was charged off in 1995 that would make it 8 years old this year. Assuming you don't live in Rhode Island a lawsuit wouldn't do them any good as long as you answered it. Charged off debts can make it difficult to get a credit card or a home, but not one that's that old. Just write them back and tell them you aren't going to pay.
