If you contact the bank, I suggest you DO NOT do it by phone. Send them a letter, with just the BARE information on it, refer to your credit report, the one where it is being shown as a balance due, and say, "my xxx report and my xxx report show no balance due on this account, this report shows $$$ due, please check your records and advise me of the status of this account.

If the bank has changed hands, or if the paperwork wasn't done properly in the first place,the lien may not have been recorded.

I don't have any advice about your marital situation, he is probably too big to tell him to stand in the corner. But, I can say this,--if you were so oblivious to your credit situation all those years you were feeding his ego about being "in charge", and in effect sanctioning his subterfuge by being blindly submissive.
