Good point about the ex-cops and military people. They are trained to take command over individuals, subordinating them to their will.
Now, let's go to the next level. Use military tactics to defeat those who employ them. They will not be expecting this from you. They try to dominate, coerce, and compel? Withdraw, pull back, create in their minds the impression they've won when in fact you are agreeing to nothing, you're simply pulling into yourself so as to concentrate on a counter tactic.
They bark an order, a threat? They expect defiance, or fear. Instead, ask about the weather in their town. They threaten you with wage garnishment? They expect tears, begging, anger. Instead, try to as calmly as you can, inquire about the outcome of the hunt for that serial killer in Antigua. Nonsensical, yes.
Remember, their thinking is linear, predictable, and thus renders them weak. They bark an order, you are supposed to comply. They threaten, you are expected to cry, not ask about some tabloid crime story. They keep it up? Ask if they have any good home remedies for canine diahrrea.
Ridiculous? Of course. Effective, why not? They are soldiers? Take them to a battlefield where they cannot go. Fight them in and arena where they cannot fight.
Once you're rid of their calls, start writing to the FTC, etc etc.
Besides, what self-respecting ex-mil or L.E. guy would wanna get involved in collections? They'd really have to be desperate.
