Short answer: Don't.

Collectors are lying criminals. By settling you trash your credit and that of several generations of your descendants. You re-affirm the debt thus resetting the SOL clock as it were. They will take from you as much as they can and send the IRS a 1099 form, essentially stating that the amount forgiven is income. Then, as proof of the old adage that no good deed goes unpunished, the scumbag collection agency (redundant?) turns their hivey derriere right around and sells the forgiven amount to yet another gang of lowlives who start the fun and harassment all over again.
Best to dispute the debt, wait them out, fight them back. They are about grabbing money from those who appear to be easy hits. The more difficult you make matters for these predatory slimebags, the more inclined are they to mosey on down the line to their next victim.
They are predators. Accomodate them to the same degree that you would a gang of housebreakers known to be operating in your neighborhood. Would you leave your door unlocked and ajar as you departed home for work? Same approach for the collection dunglumps. They are one and the same, thugs who by different means accomplish the same ends - taking money from others when their right to do so is at best highly questionable if not nonextant.

Independently,

Keyser Soze
