Five years ago I was able to help someone consolidate defaulted student loans through the Federal direct loan consolidation program. No payments were made to the entity (forgot which one) holding the loans. OF course, they were paid in full once the consolidation took place.

I don't remember exactly how I accomplished this, however I do know I went directly to the Fed gov program and worked through them.

If you go to the website I listed in a previous post and read through it, you will see that defaulted loans require specific type of repayment plan after consolidation.

If you are dealing with anyone other than the government, remember that the person you are speaking to will not make any money if you consolidate without paying them first. They have no incentive to help you achieve your goals.

We had the same experience when we started this consolidation program, but as I said, we were able to do it without making one payment prior to consolidation.
