Pay? Providian Charge Off to CA Collection

I live in California. In August 2000, I lost my job and did not pay Providian $1,080 balance. The debt is now $1,632. In February, 2003 Risk Management Alternative purchased the debt and began calling me to settle for roughly $650. The Providian charge is obviously on my Credit Report and now so is the Risk Management collection. I could really use advice on how to proceed? I read most of these posts and it sounds as though I should tell them to take a hike, the damage is done.... Can my credit be further damaged by ignoring this? What is the legal status of this debt and what legally can I tell the CA? Thanks to all for sharing your information and knowledge.
