$400 per year per family “Bankruptcy Tax” refers to the $40 billion per year discharged in personal bankruptcies divided by the 100 million family units in the USA. It is a term used by the credit industry to claim that the average “paying” family is saddled with $400 per year in higher credit costs to make up for the losses suffered through bankruptcy. It is used to move public opinion towards “bankruptcy reform.”
