AOL users are ALL inside a shell (think of it as a room with doors) - they are NOT 'on the internet', they're inside AOL. Only when they click that stupid 'go to the internet' button do they actually get connected to the internet. When they do, they pass thru a bank of firewalls that AOL has setup. Each of those firewalls has ONE STATIC ADDRESS for ALL the users who go thru that particular 'door' to the internet.

So, it is possible for multiple users to have the SAME IP to the 'outside world' - its the IP of that AOL Firewall they passed thru. INSIDE AOL they all have unique IP's, but once they go thru the internet door, multiple users may have the same IP. AOL has thousands of servers and firewalls to handle all those AOL users.
