Hubby's Ex Wife being a Creep

Has anyone here had an ex spouse done something to damage your credit standing? DH's ex wife accitvated a credit card that was apparently a joint account that was assigned to them before the divorce. He didn't know about the card and she accitvated it after the divorce. Anyway, she didn't pay, it's up to $8000 and they are coming after him for it. Since divorce is a state ruling and not a federal one they are saying he is responsible. Anyone here have a similar situation and what did you do about it? I need free legal advice! Thanks bunches.
