neg. checking info (crdit Union) need help

i made a deposit into our checking a few years back for 2300.00. the check came back after a week and before that happened all of my checks that we had written had cleared my account and it left it at a neg. balance. I was never able to pay it back. I had tried depositing but they would not let me deposit any checks at all only money orders so there for I only paid back a little amount. They have now sent it to a collections agency. What if anything can i do. this happened in virginia and it will be 3 years in january. Does the same rule apply to this account as credit cards?
