sherman and sol's

i'm sure this was explained under the newbie stuff, but i have a hard time understanding this legal stuff. bare with me:)

i was wondering about SOL's.

i have an account with sherman aqt. for $2000 (the OC debt was $900 with MBNA) it was turned into the CRA in 4/00. i moved around a lot and ignored what CA mail i got. it stopped for almost a year and a half and all of a sudden i recieved a settlement offer for $854, in 3 payments. is this valid or has the SOL come up. (i live in illinois, the orig. debt was in colorado). should i pay this or write a validation letter. i'm not sure what to do so any help would be appriciated.
