Dear Steve in Pinellas,

Sounds like these people are chasing their own foul B.O. You never signed for anything, you never filled out an application, so just what will they bring to court as evidence besides their greased down hair and shiny suits into which are stuffed their out of shape, flaccid dumpy physiques? What?
Well, for starters they will try every trick in the book, after all, these are 'collections professionals". Yes, demand validatin of the debt. Even if there is no trail back to your ex-spouse there still would be as well no trail from you as you didn't apply for this account.
Now, you may want to transfer vehicles. You are allowed one vehicle worth up to $1000 in Florida and remember that the valuation of most vehicles is very low, forget NADA retail and all that, you go for the wholesale auction value and be sure to factor in the cost of needed repairs.
Your bank accounts are vulnerable if in your name only. If in your name and that of a girlfriend or some other person they cannot be touched. Also, you don't have to disclose the accounts unless ordered by the court to do so. And you are a long way from that.
These bums haven't yet had you in court, they have to prove their case and it sounds like they are many leaps away from so doing.
Now,Steve, remember, you are in Florida. This state seems to be something of an "Experiment in Terror", name taken from the movie of the same name, at least as far as debtors are concerned. Supposedly debtors' haven, Florida has seemingly given the credit and collections predators the keys to the state. Thus we must ever be vigilant.
Watch out for the sham, fake, phoney, fraud 'Mediation" and the bloated bully boy "Mediators" provided to you as a 'free service' - ha ha ha - by the court in order to 'help' you resolve your 'differences' with the jackasses who are suing you.
Mediation is a new form of scam. It takes otherwise nuisance wannabe serial killers, pickpockets, and card cheats off the street and puts them to work in the courthouse as 'volunteers' to help 'mediate' your troubles away. And all for free, whoopeee!
I mention this because when you go to the small shams court 'arraignment' the judge will try to psych you out into believing your situation is hopeless, so pay up or the sheriff will go and rip out your dog's tail. That's the low scumball mentality you're facing here, not to worry.
The judge is small shams court sends all the evil debtors down with a 'mediator' and of course the scumbag lawyer who is suing you. Here's the point to etch into your brain:

The Mediator works for the court, he is on the side of the lawyer who is suing you. He will say and do whatever is necessary to get you to admit that the debt is yours. He will do anything and say whatever it takes to get you to hand over money to the lawyer who is suing you. This lawyer doesn't have to do much because the mediator slyly does it all for him, in the fine manner of all sleazebag psychos.

Remember that because this is what happens at 'pre-trial' conferences. The plaintiff creditor lawyer doesn't have to worry about his phony case. Courtesy of the mediator he doesn't have to worry about liability for his own actions as the mediator - who is immune by virtue of his court status - does the goon work in his stead.
During the pre-trial 'mediation' session, all you need to do is sit. Quietly. Say very little. Admit to nothing. Talk about the weather, how the lines in the highway look really nice and bright since the DOT workers repainted them, you get the idea. And - sign absolutely nothing.
Bear in mind these worms will try every trick and threat in the book to get you to admit the debt is all yours. They'll say and do whatever it takes to get your money. Say little, sign nothing, politely smile and ignore their hoggish pleas for admissions of guilt and gifts of money.
They will act angry and return to the judge, telling him you are not nice, that a trial is needed to teach you a lesson. They are full of bullshale. They are really just ticked off because they won't get a 'bonus' from the greaseballs in the credit card industry for hoodwinking you.
The more you fight them, the more you question and stonewall them, the more this costs them money and they are about taking yours, not spending theirs. You may find that your strong resistance to their sleazbag congame results in their leaving you alone.
Keep in touch. Florida is becoming interesting to a number of groups both in and out of state who have taken note of the gross violations against consumers' rights.

Consumptively,

Keyser Soze
