Scavengers vs. Judges

I don't understand. When an OC makes the decision to sale a charged off account to a scavenger debt collector and that collector makes the decision to buy it for pennies on the dollar, I can see them being sleazy and underhanded trying to get the money from you (sinse that's the nature of their lowlife sleaze ball business) but how can they go before a judge, if they sue you, tell the judge they bought the debt amount for 2 cents on the dollar, added a couple of thousand on top of that for grins, and are owed the money? I would think a judge would die laughing. Are there judges out there that let this go on?

What could a scavenger possibly say in court that would convince a judge to let them win a judgement worth possibly 1000's times more than they are out?

My case scenerio:

scavenger bought $6000 debt for about 3 cents on the dollar. Then added another $2500. $8500 is quite a return for a $180 investment.
