Another Sherman Dilemma, Texas

Ordered a 3-in-1 CR recently and found Sherman Acquisitions on the report. Confused and after multiple calls, reading this board, and reading the appropriate acts and laws I called Sherman. I was told that the bill originated from Sprint dating Jan of ’98, Sherman purchased the debt in Oct. 2002, and I owe $65. The CR shows that Sherman has been charging it off every month since Oct. 2002. Also, 1 out of the 3 bureaus shows it as a closed acct while the other two classify it as open.

I’ve never received any letter or a delinquency notice and no one has ever called me from Sprint or Sherman. Nada, nil, nothing. Plus, unfortunately, I have no records to confirm or deny this claim. I could have had a Sprint acct but b/c the claim is so old I’m not sure – in the late 90s I was a frequent mover. What I do know is I had a pristine CR before Sherman showed up.

This scenario seems to be nothing new to this board and the immediate answer seems to be to dispute it and go from there.

So, two simple questions:
-- If I dispute/ask for an investigation will the credit bureaus go so far as to check with Sprint for the validity of Sherman’s claim?
-- And, since this shows up at all 3 bureaus do I ask each bureau to investigate or just one?

Thanks in advance for any insight.
