Ok...first, I know how silly I am. I made some really unwise decisions, and would never do it again in the same position. Now that we have that out of the way, here is my predicament.

I used to work for a very small company. I was an employee, not an officer. During the 90's, when times were flush, we got an ad in the mail in my name to open a corporate Am/Ex card in the companies name, but with me as the signatory. For various reasons that sounded good at the time, I did this. In 2001, the company went out of business, although I maintained a relationship with the owners. There was about $25K owed on the Am/Ex account (split into two parts, $11K on the regular card and $14K on an Optima card). The owners promised they would find a way to make good on this. Again, I know the folly of my ways, not looking for comments on my past chioices, I am aware of how foolish I was. Well, this all happened in 2001, and over the past two years, I have basically avoided the bill collectors. My current financial situation is not good at all. I am working to start a new business, and currently have less than $10,000 in personal assets, and less than $1,000 in cash. I have recently married, and the house is in my wife's name only(she owned it before we married). Also, we have a common checking account, but she keeps all her money in a separate account due to this situation.
With my current situation, I really cannot afford an attorney. I know I could sue the former owners, but they disappeared the beginning of the summer(sold thier house, left town, do not know where). My credit, prior to this was excellent. I have never, before this issue or since, been even one day late on any payments.
So, several questions. Since I can not afford an attorney, what can I do? According to the summons, I have 20 days to respond before a default judgement. Second, can they involve my wife? And given my current situation (self employed, no real assets) what can they do to me? By the way, I am in Florida, and the last payment on the account was two years ago. I talked to one of the collection agencies early on, but none since, and no payments to them. I have received communication from the attorney listed on the summons, but have not communicated with him. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
