If you were not an officer of the Corp.and if the charges made were for the business, and not for personal items, you MAY be able to dispute the account as not being your responsibility.

Here is a link to a website that might help. You need to file your answer and defend yourself if you can't afford a lawyer. The forms to use can be found on my website, under Misc. Legal Stuff.

Your basic defense would be that although you were a signatory on the account, you did not apply for the account in your own name, and never signed an application taking personal liability for the account.

Amex would have to show proof that you used the account for your own personal purchases, and that you were the primary cardholder and under the primary obligation to pay for the account.

Even if you lose, if you are head of household your wages cannot be garnished, and the house is safe anyway as Fl has total homestead exemption. Your wife's assets cannot be touched.
