I am not certain when the last payment was made, pretty sure it was well over 7 yrs ago. Can I request validation, and then send a SOL letter?

Is there not a risk of this debt being passed on to other CAs, if the current one is unsuccessful, and having 'Inquiries' continuing to appear on the CR? I definitely want to avoid that.
