I can help you with the IRS. You need to contact them in writing and tell them that you can not pay this right now. The agents can put you into what is called "uncollectable status". It does not erase the debt, but it does postpone it. It also stops collection activity on their part. If it is not collected 10 years from the start date, it is dissolved.

The main thing here is get started right away. Do it in writing. If you have a local office, go over there and talk to them. But letters are better, no one to intimidate you that way.

The new IRS rules are set up to "reward" agents for handling cases - not like the old ones where they got as much credit for collecting $3.00 as $300,000. so, it is to the agents benefit to put your case into uncollectable for now. They do review periodically and it will not erase the debt.

It will give you breathing room. I personally know three people who have done this. Two before the new rules.

If the IRS won't work with you, post again. The IRS has a special division for people who have trouble with their regular agents. T
