Scott and Keyser, you are so right about the sham mediators. The last time I went to court I refused the court's generous offer to provide "free mediation". They weren't too happy, but nothing they could do about it.

I once accompanied a friend to court so she could recover her security deposit and court costs from the landlord. This was a slam dunk as the law REQUIRES a certified letter to be sent within 15 days. El Cheapo didn't want to spend $3.85 and didn't follow the law. The case is over.

The mediator greeted the landlord like a long lost army buddy and proceeded to badger my friend for an hour- you don't have a case, you will lose, you will have to pay him. Finally the mediator brought me into the room to "talk some sense into her." I did. I told her to tell them the game was over and she was leaving. We did.

BTW, that mediator was reported to he proper authorities and is no longer making free money off the taxpayers. Unfortuntely, there are many more of them waiting in the wings.

Yes, she went back to court and the judge looked at the landlord - wanted to know why he was wasting the courts time and awarded my friend her money and court costs.

Sometimes the little guy wins.
