What happens to student loans in a bankruptcy? (m)

My lawyer and his assistant said that it would go in the plan...but how so? And don't you still pay on it when you get out of the plan? Obviously I am speaking of student loans in a Ch. 13. My student loan and my spouses student loan total 45k. Ouch. Julie
