Seperate Collection Agencies collecting the same debt

I have an old debt from CitiBank. I have letters from two seperare collection agencies demanding payment of that same debt. The amounts are different on both. Whats going on? Did Citibank sell the debt out to several collection agencies? Who should I pay? If Either? Citibank cant give me any information, they say they are no longer collecting on the debt. HAs anyone had this happen?
